NAMES:
INCI Name: Citric Acid
SOURCE:

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
Citric acid.
Citric acid is produced through a fermentation process involving a specific type of mold called Aspergillus niger. This mold is cultivated in a nutrient-rich environment containing sugars, such as those derived from molasses or corn starch. As the mold grows and metabolizes the sugar, it produces citric acid as a byproduct. The citric acid is then extracted from the fermentation broth, purified, and crystallized to form a white powder. Citric acid plays a crucial role in cold process soapmaking as a pH adjuster. The soapmaking process naturally produces a lye solution with a high pH level, which can be harsh on the skin. Incorporating citric acid into our soap recipes helps to neutralize the lye, gradually lowering the pH to a more skin-friendly level. This pH adjustment is essential for creating a gentle and balanced soap bar. Additionally, citric acid acts as a preservative, helping to extend the shelf life of our soap by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mold. It also contributes our soap's hardness and improves lather quality, enhancing the overall performance and feel of our finished soap bars.
